A short trip, but full homes
This isn't a few boxes on a spare truck. People moving to Canberra tend to take the whole house, and on a short route most of the price is loading and unloading, not kilometres.
What a Sydney to Canberra move costs (2026)

Backloading or a dedicated truck?
On a long route, backloading saves a lot. On 286 km the gap is smaller, and a dedicated truck usually delivers the next business day.
- About $100 to $160 per m³ on this route
- Usually 1 to 3 business days, so be flexible on dates
- Best for a few items or a small home
- One removalist publishes $150 to $200+ per m³ for this route
- Usually delivered the next business day, on dates you set
- Worth pricing for a full house or a fixed handover date
Ask each removalist for both prices. Our backloading guide lists the questions to ask before you say yes.
Down the Hume, then the Federal
The truck leaves the Hume past Goulburn and takes the Federal Highway along Lake George into Canberra. It's a day trip for most crews.

On a route this short, the road matters less than access at each end. Tell removalists about lifts, stairs and parking, and book the lift if you're moving into an apartment.
Canberra or Queanbeyan? Check which side of the border
Canberra's suburbs run straight into New South Wales. Queanbeyan, Jerrabomberra and Googong are a short drive from the city but sit in NSW, so moving there isn't an interstate move at all.
- Get an ACT licence within 3 months
- Register your car in the ACT within 3 months
- Your new bond goes to the ACT Revenue Office
- Keep your NSW licence and rego; just update your address
- NSW rules for your new lease and bond
- NSW school starting age and enrolment
Kids starting school? The ACT's cut-off is three months earlier
New South Wales starts Kindergarten for children who turn 5 by 31 July. The ACT starts Kindergarten for children who turn 5 by 30 April. So a May, June or July birthday starts a year later in Canberra.

- Can start school the year they turn 5
- Starts the year after
- Born May to July: the two differ
- Born in May, June or July and due to start Kindergarten? In Canberra your child would usually start a year later than in Sydney. Talk to the new school early.
- School is compulsory in the ACT from age 6. Some children can start early if they meet the ACT's early-entry requirements.
- Moving to Queanbeyan or Googong? NSW's 31 July cut-off still applies.
Once you're in Canberra
You have 3 months for most of it, done at an Access Canberra service centre. The NSW steps come after.
Licence: 3 months
Swap your NSW licence for an ACT one within 3 months. Bring your NSW licence history; it's free if the expiry date stays the same.
Car: inspect, then register
Register your NSW car in the ACT within 3 months. It needs an inspection first, and motor vehicle duty may apply.
Power: same site, no new gas
Compare ACT electricity plans on Energy Made Easy, as in NSW. New gas connections have been banned since December 2023, so newer homes are all-electric.
Winter: about 0°C
Canberra's July nights average around 0°C, against about 8°C in Sydney. Check the heating before you sign a lease.
Back in NSW: cancel your NSW rego through Service NSW once the car is registered in the ACT, to see if you're due a refund, and claim your bond through Rental Bonds Online after the final inspection.

Common questions
How long does a Sydney to Canberra move take?
A dedicated truck usually loads in Sydney and delivers the next business day, and sometimes the same day. Backloading usually takes 1 to 3 business days because the truck carries other loads. Driving yourself takes about 3.5 hours.
How much does it cost to move from Sydney to Canberra?
With backloading, roughly $1,500 to $2,400 for a 2-bedroom home and $3,000 to $4,800 for 3 bedrooms, based on published rates of about $100 to $160 per m³. One booking platform's data puts the average job at $2,282 for 20.6 m³.
Is backloading worth it on such a short move?
For a few items or a small home, usually yes. For a full house, the saving is smaller than on long routes, and a dedicated truck gives you fixed dates and usually next-day delivery. Ask for both prices.
Is Queanbeyan in the ACT?
No. Queanbeyan, Jerrabomberra and Googong are in New South Wales, even though they're part of greater Canberra. Moving there from Sydney means you keep your NSW licence and rego and only update your address.
Do I need to re-register my car in the ACT?
Yes, within 3 months of moving to the ACT. The car needs an inspection first, then you register it in person at an Access Canberra service centre. Fees and motor vehicle duty may apply.
Does it cost anything?
No. Requesting quotes is free and you're under no obligation to book. Removalists may pay us for receiving requests; it doesn't change the price they quote you.
