How much does it cost to move from Sydney to Brisbane?

From about $1,000 for a few items to $7,500 or more for a 4-bedroom home, before extras. Two things set the price: how much you're moving, measured in cubic metres, and whether you book a dedicated truck or backloading.

$100–150per m³, backloading
$140–190per m³, dedicated truck
~30 m³a typical 3-bedroom home

Estimated cost by home size (2026)

Each estimate is the typical volume multiplied by published per-m³ rates for this route. Your own quote depends on your actual load, access and dates.

What you're movingTypical volumeBackloadingDedicated truck
A few itemsup to ~7 m³up to ~$1,050Rarely worth it for a small load
Studio or 1 bedroom~10 m³$1,000 – $1,500$1,400 – $1,900
2 bedrooms~15 m³$1,500 – $2,250$2,100 – $2,850
3 bedrooms~30 m³$3,000 – $4,500$4,200 – $5,700
4 bedrooms~40 m³$4,000 – $6,000$5,600 – $7,600

Houses with a garage, shed or outdoor furniture often run bigger. Some removalists estimate 35 to 45 m³ for a 3-bedroom house and 50 to 60 m³ for 4 bedrooms, which pushes the price up in proportion. Small loads may also attract a minimum charge.

What changes the price

  • Volume. The biggest factor by far. Every extra cubic metre adds roughly $100 to $190 on this route.
  • Truck type. A dedicated truck costs more than backloading but gives you fixed pickup and delivery dates.
  • Dates. The end of the month and school holidays are the busiest times, so availability is tighter and prices are less flexible.
  • Access. Stairs, lifts, long walks from the truck and limited parking add labour time at either end.
  • Packing and special items. A packing service, boxes, pianos, pool tables and storage are usually priced on top.
  • Insurance. Transit cover is often an optional extra. Check what it covers and the claim limit.

How to pay less

  • Be flexible and ask about backloading. If your dates can move a few days, backloading is usually 30 to 50% cheaper.
  • Move less. Sell or give away what you won't use in Brisbane before you ask for quotes, not after.
  • Pack yourself. Ask whether the removalist offers free or reusable boxes.
  • Quote on a full inventory. A price based on a complete list doesn't jump on moving day.
  • Compare at least 3 quotes. Published prices for the same move vary a lot between companies.

Common questions

Why do removalists price by cubic metre?

On a long route like Sydney to Brisbane, truck space is what costs money, so interstate moves are priced by the volume you take up rather than by the hour. That's also why an accurate inventory matters.

Is backloading always cheaper?

Usually, because you share the truck. But if you need fixed dates or have a full home, a dedicated truck can work out similar once you add storage or extra days off work. Ask for both prices.

Are these prices the same from Brisbane to Sydney?

Roughly, yes. Rates depend on where a removalist's trucks need to go next, so one direction can be cheaper in some weeks. Quotes will tell you.

Does it cost anything to get quotes here?

No. Requesting quotes is free and you're under no obligation to book. Removalists may pay us for receiving requests; it doesn't change the price they quote you.
