Movelane › Backloading
What is backloading, and is it worth it?
Backloading means your furniture shares a truck or rail container that's already making the trip. You pay for the space you use rather than a whole truck, in exchange for a pickup and delivery window instead of fixed dates.
How backloading works
Removalists run trucks and containers between cities all the time. Backloading fills the spare space, so you share the cost of the trip.
-
Step 1
You book space
The quote is based on your volume in cubic metres, not on a whole truck.
-
Step 2
It travels with other loads
Your load is picked up within a window, often packed into a container at a depot, and on long routes sent by rail.
-
Step 3
Delivered in a window
A local truck delivers within an agreed window, from a day on short routes to a few weeks to Perth.
Three ways to move interstate
Backloading sits between a dedicated truck and doing the packing and loading yourself.
- Usually 30 to 50% cheaper than a dedicated truck
- Removalists load and unload for you
- Pickup and delivery windows, not fixed dates
- Fixed pickup and delivery dates
- Your load isn't transferred on the way
- Costs the most; best for full homes and tight dates
- A container or trailer is dropped at your door
- You do the lifting at both ends
- Needs room to park it; good for flexible, hands-on movers

Is backloading right for you?
It suits most small and medium moves. A few situations call for a dedicated truck instead.
- Your dates can move by a few days at each end
- A few items up to a 2 or 3-bedroom home
- You can stay with friends or in a furnished place for a while
- Your old and new leases leave no gap at all
- A large, full home where a truck's worth costs about the same
- Very fragile or valuable items you'd rather not have transferred
Questions to ask before you book
Backloading quotes look alike until you ask these. Get the answers in writing.
What's the delivery window?
Ask for the earliest and latest dates, in writing.
Is it transferred or stored?
Ask whether your load goes through a depot and how long it might wait there.
Who does the job?
Some companies subcontract one end. Ask who turns up.
What does insurance cover?
Check what transit cover costs, the excess and what's excluded.
Is there a minimum charge?
Small loads often pay a minimum, so a single item can cost more than its volume suggests.
Common questions
What does backloading mean?
It means your belongings travel in spare space on a truck or container already making the trip, often one returning after another job. You share the cost of the trip instead of paying for a whole truck.
How long does backloading take?
From about a day on short routes like Sydney to Melbourne, to around a week from Melbourne to Queensland, and three to four weeks to Perth. You also agree a pickup window of a few days.
How much does backloading cost?
Published 2026 rates run from about $100 per m³ between Sydney and Brisbane to about $310 per m³ from Sydney to Perth. A 2-bedroom home is about 15 m³, so roughly $1,500 to $4,650 depending on the route.
Is backloading safe for my furniture?
It's a normal way to move, but your load may be handled more than once. Ask how it's wrapped and whether it's transferred, and check what transit insurance covers.
Does it cost anything to get quotes here?
No. Requesting quotes is free and you're under no obligation to book. Removalists may pay us for receiving requests; it doesn't change the price they quote you.
