The route at a glance

New South Wales to Queensland is one of Australia's biggest interstate moves, so plenty of removalists run trucks between Sydney and Brisbane in both directions.

Distance
About 918 km by road, mostly on the Pacific Motorway (M1) and Pacific Highway.
Driving time
Around 10 to 11 hours without stops. Removalists usually plan pickup on one day and delivery on a later one.
Dedicated truck
Usually 2 to 4 business days door to door, on dates you agree up front.
Backloading
Often 1 to 5 business days, depending on how loads are combined on the truck.
How it's priced
By volume in cubic metres (m³), not by the hour. See the cost guide for estimates by home size.

Dedicated truck or backloading?

Both get your things to Brisbane. The difference is whether the truck is yours alone, which changes the price and how much say you have over dates.

Dedicated truck

Your load only, on fixed dates

  • Suits full homes and tight lease or settlement dates
  • Fewer handling stops, better for fragile items
  • Costs more: roughly $140 to $190 per m³ on this route

Backloading

Shared truck, you pay for the space you use

  • Usually 30 to 50% cheaper than a dedicated truck
  • Pickup and delivery happen within a window, not on a set day
  • Suits smaller loads and flexible dates: roughly $100 to $150 per m³

Not sure which suits you? Choose "Not sure yet" in the form and the removalists will suggest an option with their quote.

Before you book

  • List everything, including the garage, shed and outdoor furniture. Bedroom count is only a rough guide to volume, and volume sets the price.
  • Get the volume and inclusions in writing. Ask each removalist to confirm the cubic metres, dates, packing and insurance in the quote, so the price doesn't change on the day.
  • Check access at both ends: stairs, lifts, long walks from the truck and where it can park.
  • Avoid the busiest dates if you can. The end of the month and school holidays book out first.
  • Ask about transit insurance: what it covers and the claim limit.
  • Moving a car too? Car transport is usually booked separately from furniture removal.

Common questions

How long does a Sydney to Brisbane move take?

With a dedicated truck, usually 2 to 4 business days from pickup to delivery. Backloading is often 1 to 5 business days, because the truck may collect and drop off other loads on the way.

What is backloading?

Your belongings travel on a truck that's already making the trip, and you pay only for the space you use. It's usually 30 to 50% cheaper than a dedicated truck, in exchange for less control over pickup and delivery dates.

Can I use Movelane to move from Brisbane to Sydney?

Yes. The same removalists run the route both ways. Put your Brisbane suburb in "Moving from" and your Sydney suburb in "Moving to".

How far ahead should I book?

Four to six weeks is a safe window for interstate moves, and earlier around school holidays and the end of the month. Backloading can sometimes be arranged at shorter notice if your dates are flexible.

Does it cost anything?

No. Requesting quotes is free and you're under no obligation to book. Removalists may pay us for receiving requests; it doesn't change the price they quote you.
